Virginia's New Governor Creates History as First Female State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has had seventy-four state executives, all of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this historic barrier by winning the election as the first female governor in Virginia's history.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Concerns and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA case officer won with a election strategy that highlighted everyday expenses and strategically targeted Trump-era measures rather than the person.

Beginnings and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at thirteen. Her father was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She enrolled in the UVA, earning a diploma in French literature. Upon completing her studies, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before turning to a government work.

“I was raised knowing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” Spanberger told followers at a event in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend.

Government Roles

At the federal agency, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the sole female on the arrest team. She then joined the CIA and focused on anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and abroad.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, reached a career crossroads. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was right. Everyone we love are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she participated in a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to seek office, which others told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had won the seventh district in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to step up. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she quickly became part of the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: expanding internet access to the countryside, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She built a standing for working with opposing parties and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she believed turned off moderate voters, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of the New York representative.

State Leadership Bid

In November 2023, she announced she would step down for a fourth term and would rather seek the state's top office in 2025.

Her campaign focused on themes of civic duty, support for education and public works and protection of governing systems. Her CIA background lent her credibility on defense issues and she described government work as a calling instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to counter rival candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on cultural issues, notably the assertion that she is an extremist on civil rights and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that individual districts should decide whether trans youth can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the center of the Virginia electorate.
