UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
