This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
