Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
