The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term came to light a few months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities disputes these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
