The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup are proceeding unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. While it prohibits political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of championing inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest is underway to create images to commemorate the occasion.
  • Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city during the 48-team competition.

The region hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
