Severe Precipitation Aggravate Situation for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Warn
Persistent precipitation over the last seven days have compounded the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted Palestinians in the region, as stated by relief groups.
"Horrendous" Weather Poses Serious Risks
A representative detailed the recent storm as "terrible", with downpours so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"These conditions was truly difficult for the families. The downpours were so powerful... And the gusts were so forceful," noted the official.
Authorities voice significant anxiety that young ones sheltering in temporary structures in damp clothing will succumb to hypothermia and additional sicknesses.
Deaths and Extensive Destruction
The health ministry have reported that one baby has died from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have died in structural failures triggered by the severe weather.
Additional accounts put a higher death toll. Authorities said that multiple structures had collapsed completely and many others had been partly destroyed.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by the weather.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces severely flooded.
- Many people forced to find new shelter.
Relief Distribution Considered Insufficient
Agencies have stepped up deliveries of tarpaulins, warm covers and garments after the ceasefire started, but they emphasize there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are operating tirelessly to bring in that aid and to allocate it, but the size of the requirements is so vast that we still have many thousands of people and minors who are truly enduring hardship nightly," cautioned one representative.
Long-Term Challenges and Ceasefire Provisions
The next stage of the ceasefire involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of military forces, and other provisions.
Aid organizations have stressed the necessity for "increased and sustained relief to meet immediate and long-term requirements."
The war was triggered by an assault in late 2023. Subsequent campaigns have led to a significant number of fatalities in the area, according to official data.
