Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
