Foolishness and Royal Self-Entitlement Damaged Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever snapped of a individual from the royal household.
In the frame appeared the Duke of York, with his arm around a young woman, while a companion smiled suggestively in the rear.
Lacking that image, shot at a party in 2001, who would have believed the allegations of a teenager who stated she was moved across the ocean and obliged to have brief sexual encounters with a prince of the royal bloodline?
A curious, indicative gesture by someone who had overtly stated to have no been aware of her, said he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet handed over a large amount of monarchical money to settle a protracted legal case.
A Long Period of Controversy
In this context, talk of the monarchy acting swiftly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the better part of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional photo of Andrew walking amiably with a convicted sex offender came to light.
- Self-importance: For what duration did his siblings, maybe even his relatives, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Questionable Associations: They must have known, if his employees and the police were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he openly hosted them to estates.
- Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the household did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his extravagance with taxpayer funds.
Trips were listed in public records: helicopter flights from the royal residence to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, chartered planes instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".
World of Deference
Then there was the presumption which demanded deference when he entered a room or the extreme obsession about his honorifics used on his official documents in communication to his personal acquaintances.
He could get away with it while his parent, who strangely pampered him, was still living. The sovereign did at least remove him of official roles and military positions in the consequence of his catastrophic and, as revealed, untruthful television interview six years ago.
Current Situation
Merely in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the issuance of biographical works giving more disturbing particulars of his actions and that of his companions.
Additional revelations have again revealed Andrew's assumption that he could get away with being untruthful about his relationship with a notorious figure.
People (and the press) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was no one of any significance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of hubris.
Institutional Fears
The more intelligent monarchical figures understood that. The primary concern is to hand down the monarchy, if not as heretofore at least whole and unstained.
Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of earlier rulers, demonstrating they are useful, accountable and attentive to their citizens.
His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an era when submission and discretion is no longer sufficient.
Aftermath
Finally, the famously hesitant sovereign was pressured additional. There was little choice. The royal household had lost control of the narrative.
Now it is the loss of honorifics and the ongoing and lifetime personal shame that will pain Andrew most deeply.
- Downgrading: Demoted to just a private citizen
- Past Example: The first royal to forfeit his titles in modern times
- Naval Career: Especially stinging given his role in the engagement
He remains a constitutional officer, theoretically able to act for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but none of these will truly come to pass.
What Lies Ahead
Do individuals he meets still show respect to him? Might they still slip up and call him Prince? Might they say Mr,
Of course, he is not moving to a common area, but to the royal family's extensive grounds at Sandringham.
At that location, he will be furnished by the king with one of the estate properties and given some form of private allowance.
This is not his former home, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit far, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Pending Matters
This is not over. There are still documents in the possession of overseas authorities to be revealed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Could legislators demand more
- Fiscal Review: Or investigate the improper use of state resources
- Legal Possibility: There may even be a criminal probe into his conduct
Perhaps for the present the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is limited. The narrative from the institution was plainly that the removal of titles was what the sovereign, and particularly other senior family members, wanted.
Changed Stance
The cessation of illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, significantly, the brief statement showed evidently that the monarchy were siding with the complainant's version of incidents.
Additionally, for the first time they finally showed regard for the affected individuals: "The censures are deemed necessary, regardless of the reality that he persists in refuting the allegations against him."
Finally it is arrogance, self-interest and laziness that will kill the institution. In his foolishness, self-indulgence and greed, Andrew appears never to have learned that lesson.
