Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or intelligence roles.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reply
The video message seemed to trigger a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint statement condemning the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our country with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent discourse before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Response
The officials who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are veterans and defense specialists who care for this United States and swore an vow to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the former president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Additional Political Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government telling troops to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative said. "You have active officials of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
