Daughter of Former South African Head of State Zuma Rejects Terror Charges as Legal Proceedings Commences
The daughter of former South African President Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror accusations at the start of her court case in the port city of Durban city.
The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over remarks she posted on digital networks four years ago during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her parent.
A period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been charged of fuelling this turmoil and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
Context of the Case
The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the ex-leader's detention for defying a legal directive to testify at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was in power.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier labelling the state's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to address political disputes with her father after he started his own political organization and campaigned against the ANC.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the ex-leader and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her group, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and lacks substantial grounds for a conviction.
